Velvet care guide
Lovely velvet is known for its soft quality and luxurious appearance. However, to maintain its beautiful appearance, it needs gentle handling. If properly cared for, velvet will remain beautiful and delight you for a long time. We collected our best tips for cleaning, washing and ironing velvet.
Prefer gentle washing
Instead of frequent washings, you should freshen the velvet by airing it. However, if you want to wash a velvet garment, always check its Washing Instructions before washing. Most clothes made of velvet can be washed in a washing machine at a maximum of 30 degrees, as hotter temperatures shrink it.
Always turn the velvet garment inside out before washing to keep its surface beautiful. Never wash velvet with clothes that emit a lot of lint, as the lint easily sticks to the velvet. Velvet should be washed in lukewarm water. So avoid filling the washing machine too full, as an overly full washing machine can destroy the surface of the velvet during washing. Choose a gentle spin for the washing program.
Please note that most velvet qualities tend to shrink a little during the first wash.
Get rid of wrinkles by steaming
You should always use a gentle clothes steamer to iron velvet wrinkles. Never iron velvet with an iron, as the heat and pressure of the iron can destroy the velvet's delicate fibers. You should also be careful when steaming: always steam the velvet from the wrong side to keep its surface beautiful.
