Material choices in the center

For more than a hundred years, we have specialized in creating durable and beautiful functional clothing. Like all clothes, Nanso products also have environmental effects. Through the choice of materials, we can influence the durability of the product and the emissions during its life cycle.

Materials we prefer

We especially prefer certified and recycled materials and linen.
  • Certified or organic cotton (e.g. GOTS-certified organic cotton, organic cotton and Fair Trade)
  • Recycled materials
  • Organic materials
  • Fibers such as flax and hemp consume less natural resources (e.g. water).
  • Alternative cellulose fibers (e.g. TENCEL™ and LENZING™ ECOVERO™)
  • Material innovations (e.g. Infinna, Spinnova)
  • Certified animal fibers (e.g. RMS, RWS and RAS)
  • FSC-certified cardboard
  • Recycled plastic in packaging

Materials we do not use

We do not use the following materials at all in Nanso products.
  • Cotton from human rights risk areas (e.g. Uzbekistan and China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region)
  • Linen from Belarus or Russia
  • Mulesed merino
  • Non-certified mohair
  • Angora
  • Real fur
  • Down

The main material is cotton

Nanso is especially known for its tricot products, and cotton is the most used material in our products. In 2023, cotton accounted for 50.5% of all fibers in kilograms. We are constantly looking for alternatives to regular cotton, the cultivation of which uses a lot of water and chemicals. In 2023, 14% of the cotton we used was GOTS-certified, recycled or organic cotton.

Materials in 2023

The share of our favorite materials increased in euro terms in Nanso's 2023 collection (42% in 2022 and 43% in 2023), but measured in terms of pieces, it decreased by a percentage point (35% in 2022 and 34% in 2023). The changes were influenced, among other things, by changing the material of home textiles and bags from organic cotton to conventional cotton, and by reducing the use of Tencel and Ecovero viscose. In addition to the purchase of certified knitting yarns, the increase in euro was due to the change of outer material of outdoor jackets to recycled polyester. Our goal is to increase the proportion of recycled and certified materials in Nanso's collections every year.

Selection criteria for animal-derived materials

It is important for us to consider the rights of animals in our responsibility work. We always try to choose certified animal fibers when available.

In Nanso's 2023 collection, animal-derived fibers (wool, mohair, alpaca) accounted for a total of 3% of all fibers (in kilograms), and of these, 88% were certified (RMS, RAS, RWS). The number of certified fibers grew rapidly from 2022 (70% -> 88%), and with our choices we aim to increase the number in the future.

We do not use any angora, non-certified mohair, down or wool produced using the mulesing method, as these fibers may be associated with risks of violating animal rights.
